In a strange way these past days, Ferrari have had one of the luckiest of weeks they could ever have in their long, industrious history in Formula 1. Dodging any further punishment from the FIA Council last Wednesday to Saturday's pole position lap from Fernando Alonso in Monza and then victory at its sacred Italian racetrack, Ferrari have had quite some fortune. And it is this stroke of luck that could lead them to the drivers' title with Alonso, and possibly even the constructors crown. Should these goals be the ultimate outcome, would Ferrari be worthy champions?

Ferrari achieved a sheer morale-boosting result, scoring a 1-3 finish and the Italian manufacturer is within 60 points off the head of the constructors table. And in some ways, a better and more moral performance than in Germany's 1-2. Jenson Button, who led much of the Italian Grand Prix was given a radio message from his team to come into the pits for a new set of tyres, which was published by the FIA to television viewers, but more importantly Ferrari. Alonso was able to capitalise by Ferrari on a public message and win the race. Global F1 fans are, however, still smarting over the ease of Alonso's pass over Massa in Hockenheim, which bore similarities with Michael Schumacher's controversial victory in Austria eight years ago.

Ferrari Team Orders

To some extent, Ferrari played the game by the book at the German Grand Prix in July, but exposed the flaw of Rule 39.1 - that team orders which interfere with a race result are prohibited. When Alonso's teammate Felipe Massa took the lead at the start, Alonso followed him around for 48 laps eager to overtake the Brazilian until Massa was given the message by his race engineer that Alonso was "faster than him". This was an obvious, albeit indirect, signal for Massa to let Alonso through, and did so one lap later.
