In 1847, a rich English banker gave the Leighton Hall estate in western England to a nephew as a wedding present. The lucky groom, John Naylor set about renovating the place by rebuilding the house and re-landscaping the park surrounding it.

Two Conifers Planted outside their Habitat

Given the job of laying out the park, English garden designer Edward Kemp planted plenty of trees. Among the conifers he selected were the Monterey Cypress and the Nootka Cypress.

The Royal Forestry Society says “the cypresses came from opposite ends of the Pacific coast of N. America.” In the normal course of events, the 650 kilometres between their natural habitats would have prevented them coming into contact.
