Jackson County, Michigan now has a news flood insurance rate maps (F.I.R.M.s) for a number of communities in the county. This is the result of a procedure that FEMA follows for revising F.I.R.M.s. A legal notice was printed in local newspapers and a 90 day appeal process took place. As a result of this process, four water courses in Jackson County have new floodplain information. This could include new flood elevations and new limits of the spread of floodwaters.

What Rivers and Communities are Affected by the New Flood Maps?

The notice in the Federal Register lists four watercourses as being revised at this time: Grand River in the townships of Rives, Leoni, Napoleon, and Summit, as well as in the City of Jackson; the North Branch Grand River in the Township of Leoni; the North Branch Kalamazoo River in the Township of Concord; and Vineyard Lake in the townships of Norvell and Columbia. The notice in the Federal Register for April 30, 2010 indicates what portions of these water courses are affected. For Vineyard Lake it is the entire shoreline.
